Heading North

 

A favorite among Vermonters and visitors alilke is a leisurely drive Nortth on scenic and historical Rt. 100.  Stop for ice cream in Rochester after a photo-taking session at Killington's own Kent Pond at Gifford State Woods - don't forget to enjoy your treat in Rochester's lovely town green. A few miles further north you’ll want to take a another camera break at Moss Glen Falls Waterfall (about  20 minutes further on Rt. 100)  in the picturesque Granville Gulf, an eight-mile scenic stretch that is protected to remain forever wild. Just another 20 minutes North on Route 100, and  you’ll pass through beautiful and cozy Waitsfield, Vermont. Stay left on Route 100 and head for Waterbury Center and Vermont’s No. 1 attraction, the Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory.

Turn back down Route 100 for your return to Killington. The drive back home only takes about an hour, but you'll no doubt want to stop along the way as you pass covered bridges, stunning mountain views, local shops, and hidden waterfalls tucked into the hills.

Heading East

Just a thirty minute drive East on Route 4 brings you into Woodstock., dubbed "the prettiest small town in America" by Ladies Home Journal Magazine.  Kids and curious adults will want to stop by the historical Billings Farm and Museum, where curious travelers can explore one of Vermont’s real working dairy farms, or check out the museum of Vermont’s rural past - a “gateway to Vermont’s rural heritage.”

If you continue down Rt. 4, you'll come to Quechee, featuring the Simon Pearce Glass Blowing Factory, Cabot Cheese Sampling Store, and the beautiful Quechee Gorge and State Park.

Whether you spend your time exploring bookshops and village greens or local taverns and farmers markets, you're sure to enjoy this traditional New England day. And don't forget - you'll drive local microbrew favorite Long Trail Brewery on the way!

Heading  South

Route 100 South  runs along what’s known as the Lakes Region, a series of small lakes that host vacationers and day trippers throughout the summer - you may enjoy a quick dip in the lake or beach visit at Echo Lake while you're nearby. And less than an hour south of Killington on Route 100 is Weston, home of the famous Vermont Country Store.  Browse everything from a department of penny candies to every brand from the past that you can imagine. Whether you intend to shop or not, you'll want to swing by just to experience a true 'Country Store.'

Weston also is home to the Weston Playhouse, one of the Northeast’s top summer stock theatres. Check the schedule as often there are matinees available. Another 10 miles South and you’ll be in Londonderry, where you’ll want to fill up at the Garden Gallery and Café. You'll find urprisingly magnificent works of art a great little gallery, and great meals to boot!

Heading West

Enjoy the arts in historic Rutland, VT, just 20 minutes west on Route 4. Spend an hour or a day there, because there's plenty to do. Whether it's the recently restored Paramount Theatre (complete with balcony), the Chaffee Arts Center, or just wandering downtown Merchants Row and Center Street, you're sure to love this town.

 

Don't miss the New England Maple Museum, offering a tour of how Vermont's favorite sweet has been made over the past 200 years. Once you've had a taste, you'll want to remember to stop by any of Killington's gift shops to get your own bottle before you leave town! And don't forget about the excellent shopping opportunities for Vermont goods from the past and present at great stores like the Greenbrier Gift Shop on Rt. 4 in Killington.

 

Killington is central to all these places and more. When you stay in Killington, you're only minutes from some of Vermont's favorite attractions, and near some of New England's best hidden treasures.
